How To Get Your Security Guard License

Being a security guard requires a lot of responsibilities and you need to be prepared for these prior to undergoing training. After you receive proper training and have completed the required numbers of hours, the next thing you need to do is to secure a license and the requirements to get one will greatly vary from state to state. It is important that you follow the step by step process in obtaining a license so you will not encounter any difficulties in the end. The job in itself is really hard and it can become much harder when you fail to comply with the requirements of obtaining a license.

First of all, you need to check the regulations in your state. If you are planning to work in a different state other than the state you are currently residing in, you also need to check out the requirements in the area. Never assume that you are going to submit the same requirements as you need in other state because this is not how things work. Based on the record of Bureau of Labor Statistics, you need to be at least 18 years of age for you to qualify as a license security guard.

Aside from the training you obtained as a security guard there is also a training intended for getting a license and this may include specific information which can be considered of great help. These may include detention of suspects, emergency procedures and property rights. Aside from the classroom training, the applicant’s knowledge will also be tested by means of a written test. The test will serve as a determining factor whether or not the applicant had a full grasp of the subject matter. The questions from the written test were obtained from the classroom training.

A criminal background check and drug testing are also required. These are essential in obtaining a license and should be passed by all means. Without passing these two requirements, it will be quite impossible for the applicant to get a license. The certification will be issued once the applicant passes both the drug test and background check.

Since the job also requires security guards to handle firearms most of the time, it is also necessary for an applicant to undergo weapons training when appropriate. This is an important requirement for armed security positions and can be an option to those who are applying for unarmed security positions. Armed guards can pass themselves off as special police officers. You need to keep in mind that obtaining a security license does not really guarantee an instant job. It is just the first step to becoming a security guard. If you are going to apply in a company, there may be some additional requirements that you need to submit. These are something you need to be prepared for as well. There is also a required number of training that needs to be completed for the first 100 days. Once you complete all these, it will not be impossible to get a license and the job that suits your qualifications.
